  1. Smart Grid Virtual Summit 2010

SUBNET along with Southwest Transmission Cooperative, Inc. will be featured presenters at the Smart Grid Virtual Summit 2010. Travis Jaffray, SUBNET's Technical Sales Manager, will be moderating this session. The following is the presentation abstract:

Utility managers, engineers and technicians are concerned with providing better reliability and system security while being able to quickly and efficiently access grid information and resolve system disturbances. Southwest Transmission Cooperative Inc. (SWTC) proposes to use new and existing technology and the intelligence of its personnel to conquer these challenges.

These are real life problems that utility personnel face every day and illustrates why a Smart Grid solution provides the obvious route to increasing the confidence of our customers in our companies and in the electric system on which they rely.

SWTC’s vision of a smart grid is a system that is altogether connected by high-speed networks over fiber optic links, is managed from a central location, allows the utility personnel to most efficiently manage the electric system with the best reliability and most efficiency, the main focus being serving the customer with the highest quality service at low cost. The vision began back in 1998 by SWTC installing its first DNP capable and IED connected RTU in the Topock Substation. Since then SWTC has kept its finger on the pulse of the technology and has cleverly taken advantage of the proper advancements at the right time to further its progress in a fully intelligent grid.

About Smart Grid Virtual Summit 2010

Transitioning today's electric grid toward a two-way, intelligent infrastructure is a critical step in the world's progress towards delivery efficiency, cost-savings, and the integration of renewables into the energy mix.

To successfully achieve this transition, utilities must identify key technologies and deployment strategies, work with customers to promote the adoption of smart grid initiatives, and migrate current the grid toward an infrastructure that is standards-based and built upon proven models.

The Smart Grid Virtual Summit 2010 zeros in on case study deployments, technology advances, and business models that are helping utilities envision and embrace the smart grid opportunity. The program examines the latest standards progress, best practices, and lessons learned to date worldwide in making the smart grid a reality.

This focused, full-day virtual summit brings together industry practitioners, thought leaders, and technology experts from around the globe to discuss the latest developments and strategies in intelligent grid infrastructure. The Summit’s online format allows for maximum convenience, interaction, learning, and cost-effective networking among attendees worldwide.

    Topics addressed include:

    • Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) in transitioning to the full smart grid
    • Business models, opportunities, and drivers in migrating toward the intelligent grid
    • Deployment case studies and pilots: best practices and lessons learned to date
